Support

The best forms of support come from people who’ve walked in your shoes. The Meetups section of this site lists several different active Meetup groups in the Triangle catering to single parents. I have not yet found any geared toward single parent grad students, but if any of you readers are students at one of the universities in the Triangle, I highly encourage you to seek support at the campus counseling center.

While there’s not much in the way of parenting advice as far as center brochures go, there will inevitably be a time when you look around your classroom and realize you’re one of the few parents in the room, and almost certainly the only one going it alone. Or, at any given moment you may feel that all your responsibilities are simply overwhelming and you can’t keep up. For those times, it’s nice to have a professional (that you’ve already paid for in tuition) to hash out your concerns with. There are also an abundance of group therapy choices that might be beneficial.
